What Did He Know and When Did He Know It?

There’s a lot of idle sniping at President Trump relative to how his administration has handled the virus.  Much of this comes down to cheap shots by political opponents who don’t pay much attention to the niceties of how things were at any given point in time.

What is very clear in retrospect is that Trump closed our border to the Chinese very early on, way back at the end of January, when it was just a few bare weeks from the date when it was first discovered that something malevolent was happening in China — despite the efforts of their communist government to conceal this fact.   Sadly, we have suffered almost 100k death so far, but could that have been 300k by now had Trump not acted as swiftly as he in fact did act relative to closing down entry to Chinese?

As to what subsequently happened, I remember very vividly my flight back to Boston from Atlanta on March 16th.  On that particular airline, there were exactly 2 people, on the entire jet airplane, wearing masks.  And there weren’t many masks being worn at the Atlanta airport or in Boston at Logan either.  Masks then were so rare that it was still a bit of a shock to see someone wearing one as of mid-March.  I can attest to that.

And when I finally did get back to my PC and Internet access in my apartment, all the chatter among the scientists and smart set, in mid-March, was whether this was really even a pandemic or not — given the relatively modest number of those infected outside of China.  The other much debated subject at the time, again as of mid-March, was whether one should be wearing a mask or not.  The experts were divided on that one as well.

All of that indecision and confusion by the cognoscenti — the people who should have known better but clearly didn’t — came to an abrupt end at the end of March with the explosion of a hot spot in northern Italy.   That the virus had taken on a virulent character beyond the borders of China meant that the Genii was out of the bottle, and everyone was now at risk.  Trump’s reaction was to close entry to Europeans and ultimately to England, just as he had closed entry to the Chinese.

Again, while the scientists/academics dithered, Trump acted.  Had he not closed the border to Europe as a response to what was happening in Italy, would our death toll now be 400k — or more?   I think so.

Gainfully Employed?

How many of the wage slaves out there are going to realize that they kind of like not having to work?

Before this pandemic fiasco was upon us, the number of gainfully employed in the US population among adults was 60.8%.  I suspect that after the fiasco, that number will shrink due to the above-mentioned reaction — some people will find being unemployed to their liking.

Consequences for China

A Retiree and the Virus

Trying to limit my trips to the supermarket to one trip per week to reduce exposure. As a retiree, it’s my only contact with people, so it’s my one serious risk. When the pandemic gets much worse, I may not go at all.

I’ve ordered masks online but after I ordered them found out they are made in China. Dang. China not known for quality control, to say the least. Would be pretty ironic to catch the virus from one of these masks from China. Not sure if I’m going to use them or not. I may just let them sit for a week or so to make sure they aren’t contaminated.

Strange virus if you think about it.  So many who are infected are asymptomatic but then the virus is also a killer — go figure. The obvious question is why are some people asymptomatic? Must have something to do with the strength of their immune system, I would guess. But what exactly?  Is anyone asking that question?

Stock Market Bulls

All time high in the stock market, 3386, occurred on Feb. 19 — about a full month AFTER the US discovered there had been a terrible outbreak of the coronavirus in China. For that whole month, the market kept going higher despite the obvious threat this posed. Anyone with any kind of insight into that threat should have been selling, not buying. Hindsight is 20/20; foresight is 0/20.

How Coronavirus Kills

How Coronavirus Kills

From what I’ve been able to piece together, the virus invades the lungs and ultimately leads to pneumonia.  Pneumonia kills by causing a severe inflammation in the alveoli, and this inflammation fills the alveoli with so much liquid that oxygen can no longer traverse the alveoli and enter the blood vessels, so the person in effect suffocates.

What I’ve come across that’s interesting here is that vitamin D has a protective effect against upper respiratory infections.  Don’t know how this happens or why, but I wonder whether getting adequate amounts of vitamin D might mitigate a coronavirus infection in the lungs to the point where the person does not have a pneumonia phase.  Just a thought.

Would be interesting to know just how vitamin D fights against and mitigates upper respiratory illnesses.
