Friends

Friendship became much less important to me over time because of life’s circumstances. You see, from a very early age, beginning at only age 14, I became a dislocated person who moved frequently. At that early age, both of my parents died, and I moved in with in-laws, but at a different location from where I grew up, so I lost all of those friends from my home and childhood.

Turns out that I’ve have now lived in 13 different locations in my adult life. Each move meant that I lost all the friends from the previous location. So it became ingrained in me that friendship wasn’t all that important because friends would come and go with such regularity — so they were nothing to be counted upon.

But that attitude was a mistake, I now believe. Friendship is very valuable and very rewarding, and I have missed out on a lot because of my somewhat negative attitude toward friendship that developed out of adverse circumstance.

Such is life.

Sarcopenia

Trying to do something about muscle loss in old age. But I’m very late to the game. Now I learn that muscle loss in old age begins in earnest at age 50, and from that point on, one loses 3% of muscle if you do nothing about it. That was 26 years ago without any weight training/resistance training at all — just aerobics, which doesn’t really do much for muscle loss. You have to really stress the muscle to preserve it.

So I’ve joined a gym and am now doing weight training/resistance training every other day — 30 minutes a session, and 10 minutes in their sauna. Discovered early on that you don’t want to do 2 days in a row because you have to give the muscles at least 48 hours to recovery. Will be sore the next day, but that goes down a bit to a tolerable level.

No way I can make up for those lost 26 years of muscle loss, but I don’t want to lose any more and turn into jelly — a feeble and accident-prone old man.

They tell me that weight training/resistance training is also very important for maintaining bone health — plus taking a calcium supplement with Vitamin D before bedtime.

Old age is turning out to be a challenge. You are either up to it or not — your choice.

Happy

Pleasant to come across someone who is obviously a very happy person. Not that common. When this does happen, one can feel a kind of wave of joy passing from that person through you. Like the person is able to impart pure delight, if only for a brief moment in the encounter.

Not Hangry

I’m almost never really hungry.

Have been doing intermittent fasting now for 4 years, and for every day, I do a 19 or 20 hour fast. That means that for at least 7 to 8 hours every day (every hour past 12 hours from your last meal), my body is producing ketones for energy. It means that I’ve become “fat adapted” or “metabolically flexible”, where my body uses BOTH glucose and body fat (ketones) as a fuel source for the cells, and the longer the fast, the more this shifts toward ketones, not glucose.

But it also means that because the body can feast on body fat (ketones) at any time, there is very little hunger, as the body has a nearly inexhaustible source of food from one’s body fat if you are fat adapted, which most Americans are not because they eat too frequently (never get past 12 hours), and so the body loses this mechanism to utilize body fat instead of glucose.

This versus the person who is not fat adapted and whose body is accustomed to use only glucose for all the cells. That person is at risk of feeling real hunger any time their glycogen stores are depleted, and the glycogen stores in the liver and muscles don’t contain that much glucose, so the person can actually feel real hunger many times in a single day.

People who criticize intermittent fasting with the idea that it will induce constant hunger and ultimately binge eating don’t understand the role the ketones play in moderating appetite for those practicing intermittent fasting.

Sprouting

Proud of myself. With the help of 2 Youtube videos, I’ve successfully sprouted buckwheat groats.

Now the potential is leaving me almost breathless — quinoa, soy beans, beans in general, seeds galore, whatever.

I have my sprouting jars from Amazon with the special lids, and I’m ready to explore these new horizons in nutrition. Just need a little help from Youtube.

Student Loan Forgiveness

Loan forgiveness sets a terrible example. Implies that you can borrow money but don’t have to repay it. A better approach might be to allow early repayment that reduces the outstanding debt with a percentage increase in the debt retired, e.g., you repay $500 a month and this reduces your outstanding debt instead by $750 — an incentive to repay the debt early and get out from underneath faster.
